Day Tripping :: National Railway Museum

December 13, 2013

Sometimes it’s hard to find things to do for days out in the winter time. The weather is unpredictable, (ok, maybe all year round in England) cold, rainy, and just all around not great to be outside in. The National Railway Museum is a great day out as the trains are housed in a giant warehouse type building to shelter you from all the bad weather outside. Bring a coat though, as it’s still a little cold. The National Railway Museum is located in York, just outside of the city center. Admission is free, but if I remember right, parking was around £8-10 pounds for the day. As it’s a quick 20 minute walk into the center, you could always leave your car here and head in after you’re done as parking in York is quite expensive. {Adam loves trains}I loved the mix of older and newer trains, and the plaques describing what each train did/does and their histories.
You can also take a peek into the trains the Queen would have used to travel around. Full of antique furniture, you can see the different rooms and what a journey may have been like for the royals. When we visited, I was happy to find it was Wizard Week at the museum and there were little nods to Harry Potter, including some owls to learn about. The highlight for nerdy me was seeing the Hogwarts express! I did get a couple pictures taken of me with it, but they were close ups up my scrunched up face as it was raining, so decided not to include them. No one wants to see that. This was the only part that was really outside as you could actually take a trip on the Hogwarts Express. If only it really did take you to Hogwarts Castle. A girl can dream.
We happened upon Wizard Week in February, but there are always events going on, so check the website here. At the moment, Santa’s Steam Adventure is going on until the 24th of December where kids and adults can help Santa and his elves deliver letters to the North Yorkshire Pole. There are additional costs for this, but if you want to have a look and try booking something head here.
Have you been to the National Railway Museum?

I will dream of the garlic mashed potatoes and truffle mac and cheese until I have them again. Everything was delicious except the sticky toffee pudding wasn’t anything to write home about, so grab the creme brûlée instead. Go with a friend who will share so you can try more dishes!

So this Christmas season was a pretty special one but also draining as there’s so many emotions swirling round this time of year that no one talks about.

Here’s to more adventures in 2023 and hopefully some more calm moments!
