Adventures In :: Wales – Beddgelert and Gelert’s Grave
I still have a few Wales posts to share, and thought I’d show you the cutest town we stopped off in a) because it looked pretty and b) the ice cream shop looked really good. We’ve got our priorities straight. The town is called Beddgelert, and we found out they had a story to go with it.
Tiramisu, always. That’s exactly what I got. Bedgelert is home to Gelert’s Grave, which we had never heard of, but followed a line of people headed to it anyway. It turns out Gelert was a family dog, who was killed by his master the Prince of North Wales as he thought the dog had killed his child upon returning home to a lot of blood and a missing baby. It turns out that the dog had actually killed a wolf who had broken in (thus the blood) and the child was fine since the dog had protected it from the wolf. Such a sad story. Before we left, we had some spare time before needing to catch a steam train, so we hung out on the wall along the river reading and soaking in the sun. If you are traveling around Snowdonia and come across Beddgelert, it’s well worth a stop. It’s got a few cute shops and restaurants, but the views are what makes it. You can walk along the river to get to Gelert’s grave and the hills and cliffs surrounding are absolutely beautiful.
