Last year we went to Matlock Bath to ride the cable cars to The Heights of Abraham. It’s a park on the top of a hill where there’s caverns, a little museum, and a park to hang out in. Once you pay the fee to ride the cable cars, everything else is included. The best part for me were the views of the Derwent Valley and countryside, both on the way up and once you reached the top. There is even a tower you could climb up to get that much higher. From the tower and hill you can see Riber Castle, which isn’t open to the public. After a quick search to see what was going on with it, it’s apparently being turned into apartments.
There are two caverns you can go in, and I loved the changing light colours as it felt really magical. The guides give you a bit of background on the caves as well which was interesting. There was a cafe as well, but I couldn’t tell you what it was like as we headed back into the village for fish and chips instead, which I would recommend. There’s a few cafes and some shops lining the main street, and a river walk on the opposite side of them. We are hoping to head back and explore a little more of the area as we had no idea all of the attractions and sights around it until we had started to do a bit of research. I thought it was a great day out, and you can easily stretch your visit for a few hours and take your time enjoying the hill top if you luck out with a nice day.
If you’d like to visit, you can check out The Heights of Abraham website here for ticket information and opening times.
