Almost to the top, we were rewarded with this beautiful and serene garden. It was so quiet and there were just a couple people lazily dotted around the grass in the shade. If we hadn’t taken the path from hell steeper path, we probably would have missed this little gem.
Saturday we decided to tackle the big hill we could see in the distance along the river, and figured we would be rewarded by amazing views of Florence. We weren’t wrong. Being the adventurers we are, we obviously just found the closest path to get up the hill; which happened to be straight up. We could have followed the road and meandered slowly up and gotten there a little later and less sweaty, but where’s the fun in that?
At the top of the hill, the whole city unfolds beneath you. A close inspection allows you to pick out the different monuments and sites you’ve taken in at street level, and I could personally just sit and watch the city stretch out before me all day. After our hike, on our way back to the centre of Florence, we came across this little restaurant along the river. It was nestled in a little park area with trees providing lots of shade, and outstanding views of the river and the buildings running alongside it. When it came time to order things proved a bit difficult as everything was in Italian, but one of the waitresses was super helpful and helped to translate the things we couldn’t work out. We then ordered and were told that those things had run out, so yells ensued to the kitchen only a few feet away between the waitress and the chefs, and we got there in the end with what was available. I ordered the prosciutto and melon (which was second on my list anyway) and it was the perfect lunch for such a hot day and after our little workout.
Also just a mention to save some pennies if you are planning on hiking around in the heat, take a water bottle with you (or buy one) and keep that same bottle as there are water fountains all over the city (we found this was the same in Rome as well) with good clean water that you can just refill your bottle with. You never seem to have to go very far to find one either if you keep an eye out. Some of them are even quite fancy and pretty as well.
