We took a few short trips while living in Christchurch. Over a bank holiday long weekend we decided to go on a road trip with our tent and without a plan along the eastern coast, and ended up at the southern tip, in Invercargill. A quick stop at an information center for camping places in the area led us to a super cheap overnight cruise around Milford Sound on the Milford Mariner.
This little bird below is called a Kia, and they are little troublemakers. There are a few parking lots through the mountains on the way to the sound that you can stop off and enjoy the views. These little brats love to eat the rubber from around your windows on your car, and pick and your windshield wipers and anything thats loose really! Their saving grace is the fact that they are so cute, and the fact that you can get really close and almost pet them (I tried, I always do).
Normally overnight cruises can be a little expensive, but honestly I think this one would have been worth paying full price for. The food was tasty, and the views were amazing. They also anchored and let you kayak around the mountains and while doing this we saw some penguins along the shore up close. They also asked if anyone wanted to jump off the boat and got for a swim. I was obviously game, and one other person. The people on our boat weren’t so brave. Let me tell you, I may look smiling and happy after climbing back onto the boat but that water was COLD. I mean cold like they had just broke up ice chunks in it. I’m glad I did it though, all in the name of fun. The first day when we got on the boat was sunny and pretty, and when we woke up we saw this incredible fog settling over the mountains, and it just made everything look surreal. I would highly recommend people traveling around to do this short overnight cruise, you get to see views you wouldn’t get otherwise, and it’s a great alternative to camping for a night!Have any of you been to Milford sound? Or Doubtful sound? We never made it there.
