Hanmer Springs was one of those places that you just can’t get enough of. Sometimes I would get out of work on a chilly night and Adam would suggest an impromptu trip to the hot pools. Who was I to deny us the sulphury goodness.
It was about an hour away from Christchurch, but this didn’t matter to us as it was an easy drive, and we knew hot pools awaited us on the other end. Think a whole complex of hot tubs, it was bliss. They also have spa services available but we never took advantage of these. There are normal thermal pools along with three sulphur pools. Word of warning, don’t wear your jewellery in the sulphur pools! I wore a sterling silver clover necklace in and was horrified when it turned all brassy. Not to fear though, the wonderful people at the desk polished it up good as new for me, but if you just take off your stuff you can avoid the panic. The coolest time to go is in the winter, being in a hot pool surrounded by snow covered mountains with flakes falling around you is magical.
I wish I had more pictures of the pools, but who really takes a camera with them swimming and relaxing?! So here’s a few of the surrounding area when we went on a weekend away with friends.
I think Hanmer Springs tends to be on a lot of tourists go-to list, but people tend to write this small town off as just a place to go to the hot pools. Conical Hill is a great slow climb, with breathtaking views once you reach the top. There is a little gazebo type thing you can sit and have a rest and enjoy the expansive mountain views. If I say one thing about New Zealand, it’s got views. Awesome, awesome views wherever you turn.
Have you ever been to any natural hot springs?
