Haddon Hall is classed as a ‘fortified medieval manor house’ so of course when we rolled up I was like, “Oooo a castle!!”. It’s an impressive manor house! It was empty for over two hundred years, and in the 1920’s the house and gardens were restored to make it habitable again. It was pretty cold outside, but we bundled up for the occasion – and boy am I glad we did. The hall is preserved very well, but even with the cosy fireplaces lit inside it was a chilly wander round. I think a family actually still lives in part of it, so I hope their half is warmer!
It was such a nice unplanned day out (we had originally planned to go back to Belvoir Castle but you can only go if you join a tour and they only leave three times a day) even if it was a little chilly. We managed! I just learned today from my mom’s friend Kathy, that this was one of the castles in The Princess Bride!! My life is complete and now I want to go back and inspect it more closely.
